Tubercular pleural effusion with epithelioid cells– A rare cytological case presentation

Tuberculosis is one of the most prevalent disease developing countries resulting in significant morbidity. Extra pulmonary tuberculosis results pleurisy among predilection to other organ and systems like lymph nodes. Pleurisy tubercular pleural effusion. Pleural effusions are mostly seen immunocompetent patients. Here we present a case effusion which was diagnosed by cytology examination fluid 22-year-old female, who presented with shortness breath, generalized weakness decreased appetite. Radiological investigations revealed unilateral tapping done sent for cytological examination. Cytospin aspirate smear showed degenerated mesothelial cells, histiocytes, few epithelioid mature lymphocytes splintered chromatin. A diagnosis made further tests CBNAAT confirmation diagnosis. positive strain Rifampicin sensitive mycobacterial identified. Patient started on anti drugs according National Elimination Program. To conclude, fast inexpensive method diagnosing etiology pointing us right direction.
